Drawing at Kingsbrae Garden, May 2026

Here are some drawings I created during my KIRA (Kingsbrae International Residency for the Arts) artist residency in May 2026.

For this residency, I wanted to explore the concept of “Budding”—that moment when buds begin to open and reveal the young structures that will become leaves or flowers when fully mature. It’s an incredibly beautiful stage that too often goes unnoticed, simply because it’s so fleeting. I have been observing this stage for several years, and until this year, I hadn’t had the time to focus on it fully. This residency came at just the right time, and in three weeks I was able to create several drawings, some of which still need to be completed. I plan to continue expanding this series in the years to come.

These drawings were first sketched directly in the garden. Later, in the studio, the sketches were transferred to Fabriano Artistico or Saunders watercolor paper. They were developed in ink and, for some, in watercolor.
